According to the legends, Lord Dhanwantari is the one who taught Sushruta sages the science of Ayurveda, who later began the practise of surgeries. It is also stated that he is the supreme deity who saves the celestial beings from all kinds of ailments, suffering and old age.

Lord Dhanwantari is depicted as a God with four arms carrying amrut in one hand, shanka and chakra in the other two and the fourth arm has a leech. One can find the ancient shrine of Dhanwantari in the premises of Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple.
