The blissful festival of Dhanteras is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi who is regarded as Goddess of wealth and prosperity. This festival is celebrated all over India on the first day of the blazing and joyous occasion of Diwali. The word Dhana means money and Teras stands for thirteen as the celebration of Dhanteras is performed on the thirteenth day of the Hindu month Kartik.

When is Dhanteras actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Dhanteras 2020 falls on the 13th of November month. Dhanteras is a festival of affluence that arrives in the Hindu month of Karthik and is devoted to Goddess Lakshmi who bestows her devotees’ all the materialistic pleasures of life.

Dhanteras Significance

As per legendary stories, on Dhanteras, Goddess Lakshmi appeared with a pot of nectar from the milky ocean which was churned for both gods and demons. Dhanteras is a very auspicious festival celebrated in the Hindu religion. This day is also dedicated to Lord Dhanvantri who is known as the physician of deities. Dhanvantari is also called the father of Ayurveda thus this deity is worshipped on Dhanteras for good health and well-being.

All the Hindus celebrate Dhanteras with great fervor and joy in India. Purchasing gold and silver ornaments on the holy day of Dhanteras is considered very auspicious as it symbolizes welcoming Goddess Lakshmi to our homes. People clean their house on this day and they decorate it with rangoli, earthen lamps. The footprints of Goddess Lakshmi are drawn in front of the door to welcome the goddess of wealth with love and affection. People worship Goddess Lakshmi by performing Dhanteras puja which is also called Lakshmi Puja and they offer sweets made from jaggery. In some rural parts of Maharashtra and other states, people worship the cattle as they are the source of their income.
