Goddess Sati the first wife of Lord Shiva sacrificed herself into the great Yagna due to the insult of his husband done by his father Daksha. In anger, Lord Shiva started doing the Tandav carrying her body on his shoulders. To calm down Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu severed the body of Goddess Sati into 51 parts. The body parts of Goddess Sati fell on earth in different parts where the Shakti Peethas are established later. The Kamakhya temple is one of these Shakti Peethas.

The annual festival called Ambubachi Mela is celebrated every year during the month of June. This is the period when Goddess Kamakhya Devi goes through the annual menstrual cycle. The doors of Kamakhya temple remain closed during this period which gets open after the Goddess Kamakhya Devi is bathed and rituals are performed.
