Important Facts

Once, Ganga was flowing at a rapid pace. At that time the sage Jahnu was absorbed in the Lord's attention and kept his Kamandal and other items there too. When Ganga passed away from Jahnu Rishi, she also took away her Kamandala and other belongings with her. When Jahnu Rishi's eyes opened, he became angry not to see his stuff. His anger was so much that in his anger he drank the entire Ganges.

After which Bhagiratha Rishi requested Jahnu Rishi to free Ganga. Jahnu Rishi accepted Bhagiratha Rishi's request and took Ganga out from his ear. At the time when the incident took place, it was Saptami of Vaishakh Paksha, hence Ganga Saptami is celebrated from this day. It is also called the second birth of Ganga. Therefore, because of being the daughter of sage Jahnu, Gangaji was called 'Jahnavi'.
