As per the Gregorian Calendar, Hartalika Teej 2020 falls on the 21st of August month. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Hartalika Teej arrives in the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month.

Hartalika Teej Significance

According to the mythological stories, it is believed that Goddess Parvati was in love with Lord Shiva. Therefore she was doing penance for so many years in the form of Hartalika to plead and seek Lord shiva as her Husband. Lord Shiva was not aware of this but one day Lord Shiva heard about Goddess Parvati’s penance and he went to visit her.

Lord Shiva was pleased by Goddess Parvati’s devotion and dedication and he asked Parvati what she wanted in her life. Goddess Parvati confessed about her love and affection towards him and her desire to get married to Lord Shiva. As Lord Shiva was impressed by her penance he agreed to marry her.

What to do on Hartalika Teej

Women should wake up early in the morning and take a bath with sesame and amla powder. Dress Up in fine traditional clothes. Women should observe fast to gratify Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and should take a vow that you will complete this fast.

The ritual begins with worshipping Lord Ganesha and then puja is performed to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Shodashopachara puja dedicated to Lord Shiva and Anga Puja dedicated to Goddess Parvati are to be carried out to attain significant blessings in life. Unmarried women are also allowed to perform rituals of Hartalika Teej to attain a blessing for married life in the future. Women visit their parent’s house to seek blessings for a peaceful life.
