Navratri is festival of nine nights dedicated to Hindu deity Goddess Durga who is also regarded as Shakti and her nine incarnations. The 9 forms of Goddess Durga are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri and the 10th day is referred as Vijayadashami which signifies the victory of good over the evil. In the year 2019, Navratri starts from 06thApril to 14thApril.

Navratri is one of the biggest Hindu festivals and is celebrated by every state in different forms and names. During this festival, each and every temple of Goddess Durga are colorfully decorated with flowers, leaves and petals and Idols of Goddess Durga are highly ornamented. There are many famous Durga temples situated at different parts of India and celebrate Navratri to honor the Mother Goddess. The entire market and street along the Durga temples are highly decorated which continues to be the same till the next most famous festival, Diwali.

The girl child is regarded as the form of Goddess Durga and is worshipped on the eighth and ninth day of Navaratri as Kanya Puja. Nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess are invited and offered bhoj and new clothes as gifts as a mark of respect for the Goddess.

Ayudha puja or Astra Puja celebrated on ninth day is a part of the Navratri festival. The books, vehicles, weapons, tools along with various types of equipment are worshipped on this day.

People celebrate Navratri by performing the Dandiya Raas and Garba Dance which are the two most famous traditional folk dances of Gujarat and Vrindavan. The 10th day is celebrated as Vijayadashami. Vijayadashami or Dussehra is celebrated on the marks of victory of Goddess Durga over demons Shumbh and Nishumbh and the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana.
