Vyasa Puja which is observed as the birth anniversary of great sage Veda Vyasa. It is one of the most popular Hindu festivals celebrated all over India. On this holy occasion of Vyasa Puja, people worship their gurus, mentors, teachers for showing them the right direction and for imparting innumerable knowledge to them. Vyasa Puja is also known as Guru Purnima or Vyas Purnima in some parts of India.

When is Vyasa puja actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Vyasa puja 2020 falls on the 5th of July month. As per the Hindu calendar, Vyasa Puja is observed on the full moon of Ashadha Month.

Vyasa Puja Significance

The word Guru is a combination of two words that is Gu which means darkness and Ru means light which is the opposite of darkness. Therefore a pure word Guru stands for a person who rescues us from the darkness of unintelligence and enlightens us with an ability of learning and appreciation.

Sage Veda Vyasa who has a place of Guru in the Hindu religion is worshipped on the occasion of Vyasa Puja. Veda Vyasa is an author of an epic Mahabharata which is considered very sacred in Hinduism. Shri Madhavacharya, Adi Shankara, Shri Ramanuja are also admired as Guru in the Hindu culture. According to mythological stories, lord Buddha preached for the first time on the occasion of Guru Purnima.

What to do on Vyasa Puja

On the holy occasion of Guru Purnima, the devotee should take a bath in the early morning and wear clean clothes and should offer prayer and tribute to their Gurus. People recite the holy “‘Gurur Brahma’’ sloka while remembering their teachers on this auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima. You can also worship a picture or portrait of your Guru if he/she is not alive.
