When is Rakshabandhan actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Rakshabandhan 2020 is on the 3rd of the August month. As per the Hindu calendar, Rakshabandhan is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Shravana. The festival of Rakshabandhan signifies the boundless love, care, and affection of the brother-sister relationship and it is celebrated across the country.

Rakshabandhan Significance

According to the Bhagavat Purana and Vishnu Purana, Lord Vishnu won the three world from Bali who was a demon king. Bali requested Lord Vishnu to stay with him in his palace. Lord Vishnu accepted his request and started living with him in his palace. After some time Goddess Laxmi who was a consort of Lord Vishnu wanted to go back to her native place Vaikuntha.

Therefore, she tied a Rakhi around the wrist of Bali and made him her brother. As a return gift, she asked Bali to let Lord Vishnu go from here. Bali accepted her demand and requested to return to his home. Lord Vishnu returned to his home with his wife Goddess Lakshmi.

What to do on Rakshabandhan

On the propitious occasion of Rakshabandhan, a sister does Aarati and ties a Rakhi around the wrist of her brother and she prays for her prosperity, well-being, and healthy life. In return, a brother promises her that he will protect her in all difficult situations of life and offers a gift to her.
