Raksha Bandhan is celebrated to commemorate the eternal love & bond between siblings. Raksha Bandhan comprises of two words - "Raksha" & "Bandhan." It means to "the tie or knot of protection". The sister ties the knot on her brother’s hand who in turn promises to protect her.
As the legend goes, Lord Vishnu defeated the demon king, Bali and won three worlds from him. Bali took a vow from Lord Vishnu that he would stay in a palace beside his, which Lord Vishnu accepted. Goddess Lord Lakshmi, on the other hand, wanted to return their native place of Vaikuntha. She then tied rakhi around the wrist of demon king, Bali and made him her brother. King Bali then told Goddess Lakshmi to ask for a gift. Goddess Lakshmi asked Bali to free Lord Vishnu from the vow and let him return to Vaikuntha. Bali agreed to Goddess Lakshmi’s wish and ever since then the festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated.
