According to mythological beliefs, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati's son Lord Ganesha were born on the day of the Shukla Paksha of Bhadra month. Hence this day was named Ganesh Chaturthi and Vinayaka Chaturthi. In Shiv Puran, Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha of Bhadramas is said to be the birthday of Lord Ganesha. Whereas in Ganeshpuran's Ganesh Avatar born on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi.

Ganesh yantra should be installed in the house on Ganesh Chaturthi as this yantra is considered very beneficial and auspicious. It is believed that by installing this Yantra in the house, positive energy is transmitted in the house, as well as no evil powers enter the house. On this day, one should visit the Ganesh temple and offer a prayer to Lord Ganesha. Chandra-darshan is prohibited in the night on the Chaturthi of Bhadrapad Shukla Paksha. It is believed that people who see the moon on this night get a false stigma. This is also stated in the Hindu scriptures.
