According to the legend of Shiva Purana, after getting Lord Ganesha's first marriage, Karthikeya got angry and went to Mount Cronch even at the very stopping of his parents. Many deities also reverently tried to bring Kumar Kartikeya back, but Kumar refused all prayers. Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva began to experience grief due to their son's disconnection and then both of them went to Mount Kronch. Kumar Karthikeya, unhappy at the arrival of his parents and he went away from them. Finally, due to the longing of the vision of the son, Jagadishwar Lord Shiva took the form of Jyoti and sat on the same mountain. From that day itself, the Shivalinga became famous as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga. According to the scriptures, Shiva-Parvati goes to see Kartikeya at every festival due to the son's affection. Lord Shiva himself goes there on the day of Avamasya and Mother Parvati goes on the full moon day to meet their son Kartikeya.
