Kokila Vrat - an auspicious ritual to worship Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati

Kokila Vrat is considered very auspicious in the Hindu culture and is celebrated by women. This holy festival is dedicated to mother Sati. On the occasion of Kokila Vrat, devotees worship mother Sati as she is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Kokila Vrat is generally observed in Northern India and also in some of the parts in western as well as Southern India.

When is Kokila Vrat actually celebrated??

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Kokila Vrat 2020 falls on the 4th of the July month. Kokila Vrat is celebrated on the full moon day of Ashadha month.

Kokila Vrat Significance

Once the legendary king named Daksha Prajapati who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu had organized a grand Homa. He invited all the deities except Lord Shiva as he had married one of his daughters named Sati. When Sati came to know about the grand homam, she requested Lord Shiva to let her attend the ceremony. Lord Shiva permitted her to go to the homam.

When she reached the place of Homa, her heart was broken because of his father’s insulting accusations on Lord Shiva. She could not bear this insult and jumped into the fire of Homa. When Shiva got this news he got very angry and sent Veerbhadra who was his avatar to destroy the Homa and kill Daksha Prajapati. Lord Shiva cursed Sati to become a cuckoo bird for the next ten thousand years because she had not followed his orders. A few years later, Sati was reborn as Shailaja. Shailaja fasted the entire month of Ashadha to get back Lord Shiva as her husband.
