Vaikuntha Chaturdashi is celebrated as Deep Daan Mahotsav in Rishikesh. Devotees on this sacred day worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. This auspicious day is also celebrated in the state of Maharashtra as per the customs and traditions set by Shivaji Maharaj.

When is Vaikuntha Chaturdashi actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2020 falls on the 28th of November month. A festival of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi is observed one day before Karthika Purnima and Dev Diwali on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Karthik.

Vaikuntha Chaturdashi Significance

As per the ancient stories mentioned in religious text, a brahmin named Dhaneshwar had wasted his entire life in committing sins. Once he went to the banks of river Godavari to take a dip in the pure water of river Godavari and wash all the sins that he made in his life. When he went to the river Godavari it was an occasion of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi and many devotees were offering the lit earthen lamps to the river Godavari.

Dhaneshar joined the group of devotees and took a bath in the holy water of Godavari. When Dhaneswara died, Yama appeared to take his soul to hell for punishment. Lord Shiva arrives at that moment and told Yama that his sins are washed when he had taken a bath in the Godavari river. After that, the soul of Dhaneshwara was relieved from hell and was sent to Vaikuntha.

What to do on Vaikuntha Chaturdashi

Devotees should wake up early in the morning and take a bath. Wear clean clothes. Observe the fast to seek divine blessings from Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Worship Lord Vishnu with flowers, lamps, sandalwood, and offer Bel leaves to Lord Shiva. Offering a thousand lotuses to Lord Vishnu and Shiva on this day is considered to be highly auspicious and it will get you significant results. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama on this day to achieve immense benefits.
