Kolhapur was previously called Karaveerpur which is derived from the name Karaveer who was the son of demon king Kolhasur who was ruling the region of Karaveerpur. Lord Shiva killed Karaveer in war and Kolhasur got defeated by Goddess Mahalaxmi. When Kolhasur got defeated by Goddess Mahalaxmi, he realized his misdeeds and requested for three boons from the goddess. One was the city should be renamed by his name. The second was, he asked for salvation and third was, he asked Goddess Mahalakshmi to stay in his kingdom forever. Therefore, the city is named as Kolhapur from Karaveerpur.

Kolhapur Mahalakshmi temple is also called as Dakshin Kashi because it is a permanent house of Goddess Mahalakshmi and her consort Lord Vishnu. It is said, worshipping Goddess Mahalaxmi brings spiritual blessings in the form of progeny, courage, success, education, and foodgrain.
