Varaha Jayanti is a holy ritual performed to celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Varaha. It is celebrated in the southern states of India. As per the Hindu mythological stories, Lord Vishnu who is recognized as a saviour of the world was reborn as Varaha on this auspicious day to save the world from the terror of two dominant demons who had threatened all the three worlds.

When is Varaha Jayanti actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Varaha Jayanti 2020 falls on 21st of the August month. According to the Hindu Lunar calendar, Varaha Jayanti appears on the Dwitiya Tithi in Shukla Paksha of Magh Month.

Varaha Jayanti Significance

The two sons of sage Kashyapa and Holika named Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha turned into powerful cruel demons who had chosen the path of anarchy got succeeded to plead the Lord Brahma with their abiding loyalty and constant worship. One fine day Lord Brahma blessed them with their presence and told them to ask their wish. They asked to make them invulnerable in all three worlds.

Lord Brahma blessed them with their wish and they started ruling all three worlds. To diminish the demons Lord Vishnu took the form of Varaha who was half-board and Half-human who balanced the life of the earth with his tusks and killed Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha in the battle and ended their terror from all the three worlds. Since that day people started worshipping lord Varaha for the protection of the world.

What to do on Varaha Jayanti

Devotees should wake up early in the morning and take a bath. They should observe the fast to plead Lord Varaha. Start the preparation to worship with washing the idols of Lord Varaha. After washing the idols place them inside the Kalasha. A Kalasha should be filled with water and mango leaves are saturated in the Kalasha. Place the coconut on the top of the Kalasha and it should be donated to Brahmins later. Read the holy Bhagwat Gita on this auspicious occasion of Varaha Jayanti to seek blessings from Lord Varaha. Devotees observing fast should donate clothes and money to poor people.
