The full moon day of Ashadha month is called Ashadha Purnima which is also celebrated as Guru Purnima in the Hindu culture. On the auspicious occasion of Ashadha Purnima, or Guru Purnima people worship Lord Vishnu to attain great happiness and pleasures of life and seek blessings from their Guru or mentor.

When is Ashadha Purnima actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Ashadha Purnima 2020 falls on the 5th of July month. According to the lunisolar calendar, a moon resides in the Purvashada or Uttarashada Nakshatra on the full moon day of Ashada Month.

Ashadha Purnima Significance

According to Hindu mythology, a great sage named Veda Vyasa who is an author of epic Mahabharata was born on the day of Aashadha Shukla Paksa Purnima. Therefore Ashadha Purnima is also called Vyasa Purnima. Buddhist culture says that approximately 2500 years ago Lord Buddha taught his first lesson at Sarnath on this holy day of Ashadha Purnima.

Wake up early in the morning and take a bath. Wear clean yellow-coloured clothes and offer prayers with diyas, essence, flowers, and dhup to Lord Vishnu. Recite the name of Lord Vishnu the whole day of Aashadha Purnima. Listen to Satyanarayana Katha to attain great benefits on the holy occasion of Aashadha Purnima. After praying to Lord Vishnu, the devotee should serve food to brahmins and poor people. Donating food grains and clothes on Ashadha Purnima is believed to please the deity and you will be abundantly blessed by the almighty.

The devotee worshipping Lord Vishnu along with Goddess Laxmi and Goddess Saraswati under a banyan tree on this day will be benefited with good health, wealth and Knowledge. Observing Gopadam Vrat is considered as highly auspicious on the occasion of sacred Aashadha Purnima. The devotee who is observing Gapadam Vrat should worship the holy cow by offering her Naivedya and should apply a tilak on her forehead to seek blessings from her. Devotees should seek blessings from the Guru or mentor.
