Entrance Doors are a part of all auspicious occasions

The entrance or the door of a building in Indian culture has got more importance. It is not just considered as a transiting space rather a progressive succession through space. The Vaastu Shastra gives us the guidelines regarding the proportions of doors and its decoration.

If you take q quick look at the Indian temples, you will notice that the sculptor has focused more on the entrance or the gateways to highlight its symbolic and iconographic content. One can associate the concept of Trinity in the system of Satyam, Shivam, and Sundaram. One passes through the outer domain Satyam which means reality to the Shivam which indicates the purity of the Sundaram which is the divinity.

One must ensure cleanliness before meeting God that is why one is asked to wash their feet before entering the holy place.

The entrance doors of the house are more similar to the temples but are more static. They are believed to be a part of all the rituals or occasions that is performed at home.

Plain doors are considered to be inauspicious as per Vaastu Shastra hence one can usually find the auspicious symbols of the sun, moon and holy yantras. One will also find the pictures of Lord Ganesh, Purnakalasha, Swastik and Aum as they sanctify the home bestowing the residents with wealth and prosperity. The rangoli drawn in-front of the house is believed to stop the evil from entering the house.

The threshold which is the vital part of the door is believed to absorb negative energy from the hell and reflects back. One must not sit on the threshold as it is considered to bring misfortune. The horseshoe embedded in the threshold stops the negative energy from entering the house.

Growing of a holy Tulsi plant is considered to be auspicious as this plant is sacred and is connected with Lord Vishnu and goddess Maha Lakshmi. One should also hang ‘Torana’ at the doors. Torana is a garland made up of mango leaves and flowers and is tied to the two ends of the door. It symbolizes wealth and prosperity and happiness at home.

However, one should not have the images of serpents, giants, owl, fight between god and demons etc on the main door as it is regarded inauspicious.

Hence, if we decorate the entrance of the house as per the rituals, one can experience a peaceful and content life.
