Lord Dhanwantri - the father of Ayurvedic medicine is one of the forms of Lord Vishnu who is the protector of this universe. Lord Dhanwantri is depicted as a God with a pot of amrut in one hand, gaunge and chakra in the other two and one can see that a leech is held in his fourth arm.

According to the Hindu scriptures when Gods and demons were churning the milky ocean to obtain amruta, Lord Dhanwantri came out of the sea. As per the puranas, Lord Dhanwantri looks after the celestial beings and keeps them away from old age, death and other sort of sufferings. It is also mentioned in the puranas that Lord Dhanwantri was the one to teach the science of Ayurveda to Sushruta sages who later started practising surgery.

Especially the first day of Diwali, which is Dhanteras is propitious to worship Lord Dhanwantri as it is the birthday of the Lord. Dhanwantri homam begins with the Ganesh puja, sankalpa, kalash sthapana, chanting of Dhanwantri mantras, purnahuti, offering prasad, and blessings are taken from the brahmanas taking part in the puja.
