Jivitputrika Vrat Significance

As Gandharva’s king Jimutvahana was not happy with worldly pleasures, he gave his entire kingdom to his brother and went to the forest. Once he saw an old woman who was crying in the forest. When he asked her she told him that she belongs to a snake family and she had only one son. She said we should feed Garuda a snake every day and tomorrow is the day when her son should be served as a food to Garuda. King Jimutvahana assured her that he will save her son from Garuda.

The next day he lied on the rocks and covered himself with red clothes to present himself as food for Garuda. When Garuda appeared to feed himself, Garuda was amazed to see that there was no fear of death in the king’s eyes. He asked the king about his identity and the King told him the whole story. After listening to the whole story, Garuda freed the king as he was pleased with bravery and promised that he will never ask for any kind of sacrifices from snakes.
