According to the scriptures, Goddess Mathangi is believed to be the form of Lord Shiva. On her head, she wears a white-colored moon and also has four arms which are in four different directions and is thus popular as Vagdevi. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Matangi is the ancient form of Goddess Saraswati.

According to the Brahmalaya, there was a sage named Matang who practiced a lot of penance in the Kadamba forest and suffered. Due to his harsh penance, a divine and bright ray of light came from his eyes and he took the form of a woman. Since then, she has been known as the daughter of the sage Matang and thus identified as Matangi.
