Important Facts

According to the belief, this festival is celebrated to commemorate the death of Holika, sister of Hiranyakashipu. It is described in the Puranas that Hiranyakashipu's sister Holika received a boon. Due to the effect of this boon, she used to do a regular fire bath and did not burn. Hiranyakashipu had declared in his kingdom that all people consider him to be their god and worship him. While his son Prahlada was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu made many efforts to end the first attempt, but each time he was saved by the grace of God.

After learning that his sister Holika has the boon of not getting burned in the fire, he asks sister Holika to fire Prahlad in his lap. He understood that by doing this Prahlad would burn in the fire and Holika would be saved. Holika did the same, but this time also Vishnu was pleased with Prahlad, due to which Prahlad survived, but Holika was burnt to ashes. Holika could not remember that she could take a fire bath alone. Since then the practice of celebrating this festival started.
