Bhai Dooj is a festival dedicated to celebrating the beautiful relationship of a brother and a sister. It is one of the most cheerful festivals celebrated in the Hindu culture. Bhai Dooj is also celebrated as Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Bhai Phone in West Bengal.

When is Bhaiya Dooj actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian calendar, Bhai Dooj 2020 is on the 16th of November month. Bhai Dooj is part of the five days celebration of Diwali. It is celebrated after two days of Diwali on the second day of the bright fortnight of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik.

Bhai Dooj Significance

As per a legendary story related to Bhai Dooj, God of death Yama visited the house of her sister named Yami on this day. Yami welcomed Yama with Aarti and applied tilak on his forehead. She offered sweets and other dishes to Yama. Yama blessed her with different gifts in return and announced that a brother who will accept aarti and tilak from her sister will gain protection from all the troubles and will be blessed with a long life. Therefore Bhai Dooj is also known as Yama Dwitiya.

Sisters pray for the happiness and prosperity of their brothers and they will be blessed with lovely gifts in return from their brother.
