The Significance Of Chaitra Navratri Festival And The Nine Forms Maa Durga

Navratri also is known as “Durga Puja” means ‘nine nights’ in Sanskrit is celebrated to honor the divine feminine, and worship the nine forms of Shakti or Devi. This nine-day long festival is celebrated to signify the good over the bad, and the victory over the buffalo demon “Mahishasura”.

Moreover, the 10th day is the final day called “Vijayadashami” when the 10 headed demon king Ravana was killed by Lord Rama, celebrating the blazing victory. To know why is Navratri celebrated, let us check out the significance of this joyful festival.

Navratri being the most crucial and auspicious festival celebrated all over India in different ways and is observed on the bright fortnight of Ashvin or Ashvina, the month of Hindu calendar. As per the Gregorian Calendar, this festival begins on 21st September and ends on 30th October.

  • Dedicated to the Goddess Durga, the first three days of Navratri are celebrated to overcome the vices & impurities within.
  • Further, the 4th, 5th and the 6th day is celebrated in the name of Goddess Lakshmi who is said to bestow all her blessing on her devotees with prosperity and spiritual health.
  • Lastly, the 7th, 8th and the 9th day devoted to the Goddess Saraswati, known as the Goddess of Wisdom is celebrated to achieve overall success & humility in life.

Chaitra Navratri 2020

Chaitra Navratri is an auspicious occasion celebrated in the month of April and March as per the Gregorian Calendar, while as per the Hindu calendar, Chaitra is the month on which this festival is observed. Each day of Navratri is dedicated to every different form of Goddess Durga and are collectively called “Navadurga” or “Nine Durgas”. Here are the Navratri 9 days Devi names listed & explained below;

Goddess Shailputri:

Known to be the daughter of Himalaya, “Shail” means ‘mountain’, while “Putri” means daughter, is also called Goddess Parvati is the first manifestation of Maa Durga.

Goddess Brahmacharini:

She is said to be the store-house of wisdom and knowledge, Maa Brahmacharini personifies love & loyalty, to whom the 2nd day of Navratri is dedicated.

Goddess Chandraghanta:

The third day is celebrated in the name of Maa Chandraghanta who rides on a tiger and is a 10 armed goddess with a crescent moon on her forehead.

Goddess Kushmanda:

The name Kushmanda literally means ‘the creator of the universe’ from the three words, ‘Ku’-little, ‘Ushma’-warmth or energy’, and ‘Amnda’-egg. The fourth day or the Chaturthi is celebrated in the name of Kushmanda.

Goddess Skandamata:

Worshipped on the fifth day also known as Panchami is dedicated to the Maa Skandamata- a four-armed deity seated on the lotus, carrying Kartikay on her lap, who is known as Skanda.

Goddess Katyayani:

The sixth day is celebrated in the name of Maa Katyayani, know as the form of Shakti or warrior goddess is one of the most violent forms of Parvati Maa.

Goddess Kalaratri:

Saptami or the seventh day is celebrated to dedicate Maa Kalaratri, who has a third eye on her forehead that is said to contain the complete universe.

Goddess Mahagauri:

The eighth day of Navratri, known as Durga Ashtami is worshipped in the name of Maa Mahagauri. She is a four-armed deity carrying a Trishul & Damru in her hands.

Goddess Siddhidatri:

This is the ninth day of Navratri dedicated to the form of Goddess Durga, who sits on the lotus, with a mace, discus and lotus in her hands.
