Sarva Pitru Amavasya

In Hindu tradition, you will see people giving high importance to their ancestors who have left for their heavenly abode. They believe that fulfilling the incomplete desires of their deceased ancestors will get them their blessings and they will be able to lead a peaceful and contented life.

It is mentioned in the religious Hindu Texts that every individual who takes birth on this earth is bound by 3 types of Rin that is debt which are Dev Rin, Rishi Rin and Pitr Rin. There are various rituals to come out of Dev Rin and Rishi Rin but to free yourself from Pitru Rin; one must perform Shradh puja vidhi for the ancestors. It is explained in the Vedic scriptures that by carrying out the pind daan ritual one will be able to quench the thirst and hunger of the departed souls.

According to Vedic scriptures, Pitru Paksh is the sacred period to pacify those members of the family who are no more and this occurs once a year. During this period, people perform puja, donate food, money, clothes and other items to satisfy their forefathers.

This holy period of Pitru Paksh starts from the Pratipada of the Bhadrapada month and ends on Amavasya. The last day of Pitru Paksha is the Sarva Pitru Amavasya and this day is perfect to perform the Shradh rituals of those deceased family members who left for their heavenly abode on the tithi of Chaturdashi, Purnima and Amavasya. Sarva Pitru Amavasya is also ideal to perform the last rites of those people whose time or tithi of death is unknown.

However, it is highly recommended to perform shradh rituals near the water bodies like sea or on the banks of the river. Hence, people go to religious places like Haridwar, Varanasi, Gaya and Rameshwar.

Below is mentioned the benefits of performing Shradh puja on Sarva pitru Amavasya:
