Guru Nanak Jayanti or Gurupurab is celebrated as marking the birth of Guru Nanak Sahib, the founder of Sikhism. Gurupurab falls on the day of Kartik Poornima. Kartik Poornima comes on the full moon day in the month of November or Kartik (as called in the Hindu calendar).

The Guru Granth is read without a break on the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti. The sacred book is then taken out in a procession to the Gurudwara. Many followers rush towards the Nankana Sahib which is the birthplace of Guru Nanak. The holy town of Amritsar is decorated beautifully on this occasion and the illuminated Golden temple gives a treat to the eyes.
