This wonderful festival is celebrated on the very next day of Krishna Janmashthami which is considered to be the most auspicious festival of the year as it brings happiness and joy into the lives of the people.

When is Dahi Handi actually celebrated?

As per the Gregorian Calendar, Dahi Handi 2020 falls on the 12th of August month. According to the Hindu calendar, this cheerful festival arrives on the ninth day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada.

Dahi Handi significance

The word Dahi Handi means an earthen pot filled with the curd which is known to be the very favorite food of Lord Krishna. Krishna was very naughty in his childhood and he used to steal curd and butter from Gopis of Gokul. Distressed by Krishna's naughty mischief, Gopis complained to Yashoda about Krishna.

After so many efforts she succeeded in catching him. She tied little Krishna with a rope as punishment and strictly ordered Kaana not to steal the butter from Gopis and not trouble them. For this little Krishna smiled at Yashoda by which she was heartfelt after seeing his lovely smile. She hugged little Krishna with care and love. The stealing of curd and butter from Gopis gave the name as Makhanlal and Makhanchor to Lord Krishna. As the curd and butter are liked by Lord Krishna, his devotee celebrates this festival with love and devotion.

What to do on Dahi Handi

The festival of Dahi Handi is an adventurous team sport where the earthen pot filled with yoghurt and butter is tied at a height and the team forms a human pyramid to reach the earthen pot. Once they reach the pot, they break the pot then they will be winners of this Dahi Handi. They eat the butter, yoghurt of the earthen pot, and enjoy this auspicious moment with each other.

Eating butter and yoghurt from that broken earthen pot is considered as highly auspicious in the Hindu religion. On this holy occasion of Dahi Handi, devotees recite Lord Krishna’s name and they celebrate this festival by singing and dancing on the folk songs dedicated to the most loved Lord Krishna.
