As per the Gregorian Calendar, Rishi Panchami 2020 falls on the 23rd of August month. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Rishi Panchami arrives on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada.

Rishi Panchami Significance

As per the mythological stories, a brahmin named Uttank was living with his wife and widowed daughter. One night the brahmin couple were shocked by seeing their daughter completely covered by ants. They contacted an intellectual sage to ask the solution for this problem.

The sage told them that their daughter had entered the kitchen in days of menstruation in her previous birth. The sage advised the daughter to follow some ritual on Rishi Panchami to attain relief from this sin. With true devotion and dedication, the widow performed the rituals and she was freed from the sin.

What to do on Rishi Panchami

The person performing Rishi Panchami ritual should wake up early in the morning and brush their teeth with herb named Upmarga and use the herb named Datwan while bathing on this holy day. Women should apply red mud on the entire body before the bath and they should observe the fast on this holy day. To clean the inner soul, the devotee should brink a mixture of curd, milk, butter, and basil. Devotees should worship Lord Ganesha, Navagrahas, Saptarishis and Arundhati to seek the blessings on this holy day.
