This is the ceremony that takes place on the twelfth day of the birth of the child or at any time before the first birthday.

What's Included

Available only in Delhi NCR, this ritual is generally performed on the eleventh day after the birth of the child, this Naming Ceremony or Namkaran Puja is done based on the suggested Muhurat by the Pandit. The below is the mantra chanted by the Pundit while drawing the baby’s horoscope or birth chart & at the time of this ritual as well.

“Om Medhate Devaha”

  • The mother & the baby are given a ritual bath on the day of Namkaran Puja where the baby is dressed in new clothes.
  • Starting with the Gauri Ganesh Puja, Kalash Puja, and Punyaha Vachanam, Namkaran Puja is followed by the chanting of sacred mantras, so as to bless the baby.
  • Furthermore, the Pandit places turmeric, lentils, moong dal & betel leaves on the cloth which are kept with the horoscope of the child in front of the image of the deity.
  • Later, the name of the child is whispered in the right ear of the baby using a betel leaf along with the chanting of mantras. Additionally, Graha Shanti is also performed in the name of the baby.

Important Facts

Just before selecting the name for the baby, you need to make sure that the name of the baby should be easy to pronounce & sound pleasant. The name should indicate the sex of the baby & contain a specific number of vowels and syllables.

To take a note, dress the baby in new, loose-fitting and comfortable clothes depending on the weather. Do not make the baby wear heavy jewellery, but a light chain and anklet are the best to use.
