Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular festivals celebrated in India to propitiate Lord Ganesha. Also known as Vinayak Chaturthi, Lord Ganesha is revered as the God of wisdom, Vignaharta – remover of all obstacles, giver of prosperity, freedom etc. This is why Lord Ganesh is propitiated before starting any new venture, buying property, inauguration etc. He is the Pratham pujya before any occasion.
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birth anniversary or the birthday of Lord Ganesh. It is believed that Ganesha was born in the Shukla Paksh period, i.e. the waxing moon phase in the month of Bhadrapada. As per the Gregorian calendar, Ganesh Chaturthi falls in the month of August or September. Ganesh Chathurthi is described in Ganapati Atharvashirsha as the Chaturthyamanshan Japti.
