- Shradh days are observed every year in the month of Ashwin during Krishna paksha for a period of 15 days commencing from Purnima (full moon) to Amavasya (dark night).
- The Garuda Purana, Matsya Purana, Vishnu Purana, Vayu Purana and other sacred scriptures as Manu Smriti etc. give the illustration of Shradh.
- Shradh is performed on the day when our ancestors left us for heavenly abode i.e on their death anniversary
- Death caused by any weapon, poison, and accidents, Shradh has to be performed on Chaturdashi.
- Shradh in case of Akal Mrityu has to be performed on Amavasya.

As per the sacred Hindu scripture Brahma Puran, Lord Yama allows the souls to have food that is offered to them by their children or their family members during Pitru Paksh. It is also said that if one is not able to perform individual shradh puja for every deceased member of the family then doing it in Pitru Paksh will pacify all the late ancestors.
However, the performer of the puja must remember that he must observe fast on the previous day of the puja and on the day of puja he must consume food only once. It is also very much important to maintain sanctity and perform the ritual as per the vedic rules and as per the advice of expert pundits.
